From Reverend Chrys Tremththanmor:
‘One’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.’
Jesus said this in the Gospel of Luke, and then went on to tell the story of a rich man who built huge barns to store a bumper harvest. But he died and, as God said, ‘The things you have prepared, whose will they be?’
I write this article a few hours after learning that a friend of mine, only 39 years old, is in hospital after a heart attack. It’s time like these which focus your mind on what’s really important. It is expected that my friend will make a full recovery, but many who have faced sudden illness can testify to the fact that the experience can lead to changes in attitude. Some people finally take that far-flung holiday they’d always promised themselves. Others decide that there’s more to life than time in the office and scale back their working hours.
Most people, from what I’ve seen, realise how important family and friends are. Whether it be the ties of blood relations or, as the saying goes, ‘friends are the family you choose for yourself,’ the relationships we have with others are seen in a new light.
Among my fondest memories are the days out and holidays I’ve had with family and with friends. I treasure the times I have had with those whom I love.
So my hope and prayer, for all of you, is that you find time to be with those whom you love during the summer holiday period. And if there’s someone you’ve not contacted for some while, why not make a new effort to reach them? There is something to be said for living each day as if it were our last and so making sure that our important relationships are kept healthy and strong. As the Bible reminds us, ‘Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.’
