July 2009 Newsletter

From Reverend Claire Rose-Casemore:

Summer is approaching and the year so far has had its share of ups and downs, particular as a result of the recession.  Indeed some of you may have experienced the painful reality of a redundancy or know someone who has.  With these and other personal events impacting us, life may have felt rather rocky at times.

The reading for Sunday 21 June spoke of Jesus in a boat on the Sea of Galilee when a storm causes the boat to toss and turn.  The disciples cry out to Jesus, who is asleep: ‘Lord, save us!’  Jesus simply says: ‘Calm now, be still’ and there is peace.  Peace in the environment and peace in the hearts of those who are discomforted by the sudden turn of events.

A time for our souls and bodies to unwind and ‘be still’ is very important, as is sharing time with those who understand us.  By listening to ourselves and others we often see things more clearly and the way ahead becomes clearer.  But we can’t hear if we are not calm and the voice of anxiety can at times drown out everything else.  May the holidays come and with them the opportunity to relax and to offer to God our restlessness so that we may find our peace in Him.

Finally a word of thanks for the new regular giving pledges we have received – we are hugely grateful and it will be a huge help towards keeping the church active and functioning in this community.  It is not too late to get your forms back to Sue Brooks if you are intending to do so – please keep them coming!

From the Parochial Church Council:

We invite you to join us at the Ashby St Ledgers Summer Fayre on Sunday 12th July.  There will be guided tours of the village and church from 10.30am and stalls and amusements in the church grounds between 2pm and 4pm.  A hot roll brunch will be available from the village hall from 11am until 1pm and cream teas will be served there between 2pm and 4pm.  All donations of second hand toys, books, cakes, biscuits scones etc. to sell and bottles and jars for the tombola will be grateful received and profits from the Fayre will be divided between the church, the village hall and the playground.  Please contact Sue Brooks or Nadia Barton for further information or to make a donation.  We hope to see you, your family and friends there!
